This is part two to my original post about my MacBook upgrade project.
Component: Operating System
Goal: Upgrade to current version to increase OS stability and make my computer compatible with new/updated applications
Budget: $130
Actual Cost: $29
Item: Snow Leopard Mac OSX 10.6
Result: I bought a $49, 5 license version (which I split with my brother and sister who paid $10 each for the upgrade) of Snow Leopard that I installed on my MacBook. The install took only about 30 minutes. Note: The hard drive needs to be formatted in HFS+ before the install can take place. This is a separate operation, which can take place inside the live disc install but I thought I should note it because the install doesn't initially see an unformatted hard drive at all, which created a brief moment of panic.
Component: Hard Drive
Goal: Upgrade hard drive to accommodate for current and potential storage needs. Drive capacity above 250GB recommended but open to larger drives if a good deal is found.
Budget: $75
Actual Cost: $84.99, but for a 500GB drive
Item: Toshiba 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache
Result: Utilizing some of MacInstruct's directions, it was a piece of cake. Note: you need a torx T8 screwdriver to remove the EMI shield which I didn't have on hand but fortunately my buddy Paul did.
And with that, my upgrade project is complete. The total cost came to $267.62 which puts me solidly under my budget of $375 by saving $107.38.
